0800-1630: picks up any jobs from the ward round and helps the orthogeriatric team.
- AM Float (0800-1630): based on B23, but covers Day Surgery and can be asked to help on the other surgical wards if needed till midday (make sure the other wards known your page).
- PM Float (1200-2000): again based on B23 but covers Day Surgery and the other wards from midday.
There is a consultant of the week, who does the trauma ward round, they are on for seven days. Orthogeriatrics also have an input with certain patients and split their time between B23 and A21 (rehabilitation ward). There is a surgical frailty ANP on the ward too.
Elective patients will be seen by their consultant and they will let you know if they need anything done. The afternoon is typically spent chasing bloods and acting on them if there are any abnormalities, writing discharge letters and requesting bloods for the next day.
Typical Staffing
Generally there are two or three FY1s on the ward each day. There will be an orthopaedic registrar on call, who you can get in contact with if needed. There is also the “first on” which is either an FY2, CDF or junior registrar, who you can also call for support.
