Placement Details
You will be attached to a general medicine or ageing & health ward, where you will become part of the medical team. You will be given the opportunity to join ward rounds, carry our practical procedures and practice clinical/examination skills. Please discuss your own learning needs with your supervisor and the ward team at the start of your placement so they can help you to structure you time with us.
Each ward works slightly differently – you can find more information about the day to day practicalities by following the below links:
Depending on your rotation, you will be given the opportunity to spend some time in the acute and clinical assessment units during your attachment. The assessment unit offers a great chance to practice procedural skills, history taking and examination; you are encouraged to clerk in new patients under guidance and supervision from the junior doctors. The nursing staff in AAU/CAU all do procedures including ECGs, cannulation, venepuncture and often ABGs; they will be happy to support you in practicing these skills if workload allows.
Assessment
Final assessment requirements differ between year group and university, please follow guidance from your own university and discuss your assessments with your supervisor at the start of the placement.
Tutorials
Social distancing as a result of Covid-19 limits our ability to safely run face to face tutorials. You should attend grand rounds or foundation doctor teaching with your ward team. We will endeavour to provide some e-learning materials or tutorials via Microsoft Teams and are currently in the process of making these adjustments to the way we deliver medical education.
