B12 is mixed surgical specialties ward caring for patients under the care of the urology, ENT, ophthalmology, max-fax and vascular team. On occasion there will also be some orthopaedic, medical or general surgical patients too.

Day to Day
B12 is a surgical ward and covers the surgical specialties, this includes:
There are normally 5 FY1s on B12. The person on long days normally goes on the ward round with the most patients which is usually urology. The other FY1s hours are 08:00 – 16:30 and do the other surgical ward rounds between them, and any jobs generated from the surgical ward rounds or for medical boarders:
- Medical boarders tend to be split between all of the FY1s
- Most ward rounds take place in the morning
- Boarded orthopaedic and general surgery patients often aren’t seen until late morning/early afternoon
- Surgical ward rounds are often very quick and you are expected to write in the notes
Urology
- Majority of surgical patients on the ward is usually urology
- Team consists of consultants and 2 registrars
- They do daily ward rounds, including on weekends
ENT
- Team consists of consultants, specialty doctors, registrar and ENT clinical nurse specialist
- They do daily ward rounds – normally a specialty doctor/consultant and the CNS and sometimes the registrar
- At weekends, there are no ward rounds but there is ENT on call – Forth Valley and Monklands are on call for ENT alternate weekends
Ophthalmology
There aren’t often ophthalmology patients on the ward, but when there are they will be reviewed daily
Max fax
- Team consists of consultant, max fax reg and dentists
- They do daily ward rounds of their patients
Vascular
- There is no longer a vascular surgery department in Forth Valley, but vascular patients are often repatriated to ward B12 for rehab from other hospitals following vascular surgery
- The patients should be reviewed by the ortho team daily – contact the reg on the ortho wifi (67686) if they have not been reviewed by early afternoon
Medical boarders
- There are often a lot of medical boarders on the ward
- Medical patients can be boarded straight from the front door or from general medical wards
- There is a locum medical consultant who sees all of the medical boarders on the ward
- FY1s don’t tend to go on a ward round with the medical consultant but are expected to do any jobs generated for these patients
- There is a locum medical SHO who covers B12, short stay medical unit and boarded medical patients in day surgery
- They are not always on the ward but if you have trouble with medical boarders eg getting blood/venflons/unwell patients then page them for help
- Out of hours and at weekends, if a medical patient needs a medical review page the middle grade on the back door (1002)
Typical Staffing
Generally there are 3 FY1s on the ward at any given time with support in the afternoon from a backshift surgical FY1. Specialty input will be available from individual teams.
